Recording is generally very different to the recording of other species groups. It tends to focus on changes in populations and issues of migration, so birds tend not to be covered by local records centres, which are more interested in site conservation.

However, SEDN has helped the Shropshire Ornithological Society to fund the upcoming Shropshire Avifauna and also provide distribution data. Data for certain protected species are only provided to Local Authorities and conservation agencies as their nests are vulnerable.
